Spent last 10 day's finding the best software to View a HD-Rip.

Ive now only tested via the MS Vista 32bit - As long you have the correct Codec's see below MS Media Player plays well.

A nice touch in Vista is the Media Centre - Nice way to collect all your Movies - Music - Picture for Vieing on TV or Monitor.

Also use DivX 6 for Vista - this is easier on the Cpu and more slick.

Some explanations about codecs

Most of the releases in HD you'll find are encoded with DivX6, because they officially give support to HD content in high resolutions. But for what I've seen there is no much difference in encoding a 720p or 1080p in DivX6 or XviD when we talk about bitrates and quality. Both codecs don't use the new AVC (Advanced Video Coding) MPEG-4 profiles (also known as H.264), so encoding quality is the same than XviD.

When playing those HD videos, I tested different codecs, both XviD and DivX, plus Nero Digital, and I get better results with the XviD codec. XviD codec can play every MPEG-4 video in simple profile no matter what codec you used when encoding. Why?

MPEG-4 is a standart, made by the Motion Picture Elite Group (MPEG). Those guys are really who have developed all the technology behind video coding, the problem is that his job finished when published the technical information about the standart and its technology. They didn't made software for decoding nor encoding. Here is where DivX and XviD (and much more other codecs) play its role. They are software made by engineers by comercial purposes (DivX), or just for create an open source codec made by all the community (XviD). Both give MPEG-4 compatible content, and the main differents between both are in the characteristics they use from the MPEG-4 technology.

Trust me the best codec for playing MPEG-4 content you can get is this: XviD (much more fluid and more options).

I've noted that the colors are more real if u configure the Output Colorspace at RGB32, specially dark zones will be much more detailed. Configure it in the Decoder Options in the startmenu after installing. If some movie gives you aspect ratio problems, you can set the AR to 16:9.

Yeah I like Zoom Player but I find The Core Media player has better sound even though I use ac3 filter for both, got mine
hooked up to an Audigy sound card and some Logitech Z-5500 amazing sound considering you can pick them up for
under £200

Doesn't effect the quality HDCP is just another content protection system to stop the copying of hi def content

If you want to watch a HD DVD or Blu Ray on your PC your graphics card and monitor have to support HDCP otherwise
you cant watch it at all

Ripped HD content doesn't need HDCP at all :)

Been testing watching Blue-RAy + HD DVD rip's on XP + VISTA for the last 7 weeks.

Vista is geared towards HD in a big way if you also have a high end Nvidia graphics card ie the 8800 or 8600GTS your in luck as both run the NVIDIA PureVideo HD off the GPU thus taking the strain off the PC.

Your need a DUal COre CPU above 2.4Mhz and 1GB ram. Ive tested most Software like VLC,windows Media player/media centre ,zoom and have found the latest DivX player 6.4.3 works the best.

Just read AVIVO vs. Purevideo HD: What You Need to Know about High-Definition Video at Tom's Hardware - Put's its more in focus - and covers the problems ive been having! Like Nvidia only releasing HD drivers for Vista for the 8600 boards. Im also running the llatest version of powerDVD - but its not as good as DivX player which is far the best on my system - playing without any delays/clicks.
