View Full Version : Power Supply Fault?

Hi, I have had my Humax 5400 for many years now without any problems but after updating it with a new firmware a few weeks ago it just started to make a ticking noise & this wouldn't go away even after switching off the power it would then come back on again. It eventually stopped after a while but the display keeps going off & has now gone off completely & is completely dead. I am assuming that the power supply has gone faulty so have read the stickys but all the components look fine on a visual inspection. If I wanted to purchase a new psu where is the best place to get one from? I am not keen at this stage in just buying new parts & changing them as they all look fine. Thanks.
Regards, Ash

hi ash,
how useful with a multimeter are you, if you have and can use one, have a look at the psu, on the side you will see a strip plug, and on the pcb you will see the values it should be, run down it and check each one, hopefully you will see that a voltage will be down.

most people suggest go to the bay, but I always say use humax in Ireland phone No in the stickies just under 40£ (last time it was mentioned) and about ten minutes work

Hello Voith & thank you for your reply. I can use a multimeter & did a quick check on one of the legs earlier using the drawing but wasn't sure what the reference was e.g do you use ground for one side of the meter or another point on the pcb? I wasn't 100% sure so I left it. The check I did was between ground & the black wire & I got over 30 volts which is similar to the drawing.

I tried looking on bay but didn't see anything & your advice on using Humax sounds quite sensible to me. Thanks again.

hi ash1,
if you look at the psu, you will find a strip connector with a load of leads(black in my case) and one yellow, ending up in a plug which i think plugs in the motherboard.

you will find printed on the circuit board by each lead running down the side of the connector the values

gnd
+15V
GND
+3.4V
GRD
+5V
GND
+8V
GND
+17V
+23V
+38V hi, I will not cheat, i did make a mistake, this should read +30v i misread the pcb

the way i did it, was to use the gnd nearest to each value, and on the last set, use the same ground for the last 3, but i suppose really you only need to use one gnd to work the lot gnd being - and the values being +

voith

have a look at the top of the vertical round brown fings,(or any of them) if ones pushed up a bit its gorn wrong, you can tell i am a leccy can't you. i know all the words:D

Hello again Voith & thanks for making things a little clearer & spending time in writing out the description for me. Just as a matter of interest my wires are all orange with the last being black. I haven't time to check them out now but I'll try to give it a go tomorrow evening.
Thanks again.

Just tried testing the voltages & they were a few volts out each way & when I went to try out another voltage test a few minutes later then I noticed ZD1 flashing like an led so I switched off the supply to have a visual inspection but it seemed ok. I switched on the power & re-checked the voltages again & this time they seemed ok so I put everything back together & the display came back on. Maybe it's the ZD1 but I can't see this on the parts list or it's a dry joint somewhere? I'll have to make up my mind if it's worth getting a new p.s. unit from Humax or upgrading to another receiver.
Thanks for your assistance Voith.

if you`re not confident with electricity etc, there`s always upgraded Humax PS`s on Eee_bayy ............ do a search, they work fine

hi ash,
well it will be cheaper to do the psu, at least.
all the best

Hi

I wonder if you are any good with the soldering iron. Change all the capacitors in the output section of the power supply with the same temperature type i.e 105c Deg. It will cost you around 5/6 quids from ******s electronics. Or ask any of your friend who is familiar with soldering work to change them for you. Humax p/s is known for capacitor leakage problem after the age. Good luck

I've repaired my 5400 PSU twice already with a kit and soldering iron, pain in the ass. Third time I bought a PSU module from here>

hxxp://www.humax.co.kr/global/newscenter/review/tele_sat0006_3.htm

Now it's popped again. Are they still in business I wonder ?

hi maurice,
if your referring to psu repairs, I do not know, but probably not, and as edge has said, its not a good idea if you expect the box to come back able to be patched again, as they frown on it, and have gone to the level of sorting the mb so that it can not be on return to its owner.

all the best

thanks for the info, I will not send it then, it was only patched once about 4 years ago been in the garage since then with an unkown fault, changed the PSU but did nothing, bin-it I think.

hi maurice,
it might be a long shot, but lets know the symptoms first if you like and we might be able to help,
all the best
