I am thinking of placing my dish on a garage which will have almost a south facing wall. I am not that good on ladders and I would like to keep it as low as possible for maintenance. The houses are about 30 meters away at about 20e through to 45w. Beyond 20e the neighbours house appears and then so does mine (about 6m away). I should be able to get Astra 2 but I think I may not get 43deg east, not sure how I can check though. Just wondered what sat I could get with this setup.

Any advice would be helpful.

the height off the ground is irrelevant , its the obstructions to the signal you need to worry about

you can have the dish 2cm off the ground if you want to , as long as its line of sight isnt blocked by trees , washing , buildings , fences , garages etc

the general rule of thumb is a blockage must be twice the distance away of its height , so a 10 metre house or tree would have to be at least 20 metres away in order to stop it blocking the signal

.....but a 10 m house becomes an 8m obstruction if the bottom edge of the dish is 2m off the ground. The rule Echelon quoted about 2 x the height of the obstruction being the required distance from the obstruction is definitely the way to find out, though. If it's borderline, you'll only know when you try!

Understanding neighbours, yeah your right I hope they are, but their line of site of the dish is hidden because the roof of the garage hides it from their view. I will let you know how I get on.

Thanks all.

10' dish thats nearly 3m!!!!!!!!!

Ive been looking at a 2.4m channel master and the mount and pole required is massive, let alone he wants £200 and its a fixed dish so i will need new mount to motorise.

If you wall mount!!!!!!! it wont get much swing and the weight. It's realy realy heavy.

Send us the pictures it will be some beast

This might help you out. I'm sure I've seen it in other posts here. Anyway, here it is again.

It's easy to use. Just put your address in, then fine tune it by moving the pointer to the exact location of your garage's wall.

Select some satellites (one at a time) and you should be able to see if there are obstructions in your line of sight.
