Pioneer plasma prototype 9mm thick

At just 9mm thick and tipping the scales at a shade over 40 pounds, Pioneer's Advanced Design Concept" plasma is hardly noticeable when viewed side on, appearing to float on the wall to which it is attached.

Slimness comes naturally to plasma technology as each 'cell' or 'pixel' illuminates itself. This self-emissive technology has the advantage over LCD TV's which require a backlight and hence extra width to be added to the panel.

Pioneer have produced a 50in version of their ultra-slim prototype, but unfortunately there is no indication of pricing or when this screen will be available to consumers. We doubt very much that it will be making its consumer debut anytime before 2009.

With their 'Kuro' range of plasma screen ('Kuro' meaning 'black' in Japanese) Pioneer have built a reputation as the best plasma manufacturers around. Pioneer screens are not cheap but they offer what are generally recognized as the deepest blacks available on any flat panel TV.
