Hi Yoda, the Ethernet port is used to do software updates for the player online.

Yeah I was gonna buy one (may still do at these prices) but its not multi region for standard dvd's and I have quite a few region 1. There is no region free hack for the player either.

True but that wasn't the main reason for it, it would have been used for extra content for hd dvds something that costs extra with blu ray

Looks like they have sold out as there is no listing for the ep30 now just the ep35. No wonder at that price they were giving them away. I know that HD DVD is dead but standard DVD's are gonna be here for a while and Toshibas dvd players are well known to be the best quality upscalers out there.:D

Yes standard DVDs aren't going anywhere for a long time the CEO for toshiba said thats where they are going to
concentrate now on second generation dvd players he said when they've finished you shouldn't be able to tell the
difference between sd dvd and hd dvd

Can we confirm that none of these models , except the EP10 are region free or have a region free hack available ? I'd like to replace by old , but trusty Sony DVP-725D DVD player (multiregion and no macrovision) but over 50% of my disks are R1 so I really need a multiregion version .

If I was looking for a good SD DVD player I would get the "Oppo Digital DV-983H" which is due for release soon
Oppo have always been a good player using high end chipsets but this new model uses the same video processor
as the "DVDO iScan VP30" video upscaler which costs £1000
Plus you would get playback of other formats like Xvid/Divx
All their previous models have all supported multiregion
Its probably going to cost around £200 though so I guess it depends how much you like your SD DVDs
PS : I have a Sony DVP-735D ;)

The one I mentioned also has a USB input so you can hook up a USB hard drive or flash memory say for Xvid playback etc
Theres a mini review below

Cant say for certain that there will be a region free hack though but I would be surprised if not as all previous modes have
I'll PM you with places that are likely to have them as they are kind of hard to find outside the US
Maybe a blu ray will come out with region free sd dvd playback

HD DVD titles STILL being SOld in USA, Totally agreee with chelseaboi regarding this. Im lookin at the XBOX Add-on but a Standalone HIGH END HD box could be grabbed at a fraction of the buy price.
Can we start a HD Disc lending club and Share Disc's via post? Any late Disc's or Damaged/scatched curry stains w**** stains on disc's the culprit could be flogged etc :D
I have some contacts in US so could buy 20-30 discs via the online store's.. just a thought. Once you see a HD DVD its very addictive you want more :D

The £49.99 jobbie is now sold out m8. I got mine today. Nice machine, real good quality. The HD DVD's look great and I can see no difference between the blu ray I have on the ps3 and the hd dvd. The menu transitions just like the blu ray are really cool. Up scaling works well and standard dvd's look pretty good. I have just backed up one of my region 1 dvd's and put it on a blank disc to try on the upscaling and it looks real nice. Great machine at a bargain price and now waiting for the 6 hd discs.:D

I have purchased one of these players as the price of the supplied discs and hdmi cable almost covers the outlay, so now i have a player that also upscales from sd.
Now as these have an ethernet connection and they are capable of sharing with other dvd boxes on the internet has anyone found a way of streaming our sat boxes through them so gaining upscaled tv?.

My toshibas sound is superb. Hey have u got DTS amp as I have only got Dolby Digital? Had my Yamaha amp for 11 years now, since DVD's first came out. Been a great amp but it would be nice to hear what DTS sounds like compared to dolby digital.

I had this player for a xmas presence last year and it cost 250 squids, since then i upgrade the firmware twice it is a great player, i put my sony dvd hd for scrap i never like it has such a terrible picture quality i only used for recording from the sat,but i can not compare ,with this toshiba, the only thing i dont realy understand was ,when you play the 4.3 dvd i never got the full screen ,as i have a 16.9 screen, realy funny thing happen ,to get the full screen on a 4.3 i had to return to the menu and put 4.3 instead 16.9,now it play full screen.
great picture quality, i plug my yamaha dig output sound fantastic, shame i pay a lot money,i wish i knew they where going to put the price down
you live and learn, good performance, litle slow and slitely noisy, got 7Hdd disk ,2 in the box and 5 to be delivered after 20 days,at the end of the day i dont mind as the quality is rather good, sorry for the long over

Its a great price highly recommended - but it is so slow at loading the discs when you have been use to PS3 blu ray. Rememberr if your picking up a Tosh now the extra five disc offer endered 31/1/08 - although they accepted postal orders till 29/2/08 (on the basis you bought your player prior to 31/1/08)

Nah u don't unless you want the time and date. If u just press eject then the time/date setup screen just disappears. I used to enter the time and date everytime but I don't bother now. Just pressing eject when that screen comes up gets rid of it. The machine is a really great upscaler. I have recently bought the James Bond Ultimate editions (Moore and Connery movies only!) and they look absolutely stunning. The really old films look as if they were made yesterday.
