When you purchased your USB to RS232 converter you should have had a set of drivers to install. Upon installation of the said drivers an additional Com Port (example - Com7) should be viewable in the Device Manager which is accessible via Control Panel.
You need to ensure that you have the same Com Port number set in Device Manager and DSR9500 v5.6 Key Editor.
To view / alter the Com Port number.
1. Access Device Manager via Control Panel
2. In the Ports Section, find the new Com Port added for the USB Adaptor.
3. Right Click on the Port and select "Properties"
4. Click on the "Port Settings" Tab and then select "Advanced"
5. Note / Alter the Com Port number to one that can be used by DSR9500 (example - Com4)
6. Open DSR 9500 and ensure that the same Com Port number is being used in the "? / Settings / Com Port" menu.
Another common mistake is to fail to install the following files in your "Windows / System32" folder.
Mswinsck.ocx
Msinet.ocx
Both these files need to be installed and registered to get DSR9500 v5.6 Key Editor to work.
These files were not always included in the zip file for DSR9500 v5.6. If you need these files, try downloading DSR9500 v5.4 and you will probably find the said files included in the zip file.
Use the included "BAT" files to register the .ocx files.
For me, DSR9500 v5.6 Key Editor has always worked using XP.
Good luck.
