Gavin Rees looking past Andreas Kotelnik

Lucrative world title match-ups await Gavin Rees, the World Boxing Association light-welterweight champion, if the Welshman overcomes teak-tough Ukrainian challenger Andreas Kotelnik at the Cardiff International Arena tonight.

Gareth A Davies: Serra determined to silence critics
Don't expect Olympic boxing medal haul
Ricky Hatton, Junior Witter and Amir Khan are potential foes-in-waiting if Rees beats the former Olympic silver medalist. Rees, 27, has never lost in 27 fights, and was the unexpected winner on points when he ripped the WBA crown from Souleymane M'Baye last July, outworking and outpointing the champion to earn a deserved and comprehensive points victory in Cardiff in his first title fight.

Looking ahead: if Gavin Rees can beat Andreas Kotelnik then perhaps Ricky Hatton could be next up
Although Kotelnik has been unable to defeat M'Baye in two encounters - he lost on points in Paris in 2004 and they drew 12 months ago in Liverpool - the Ukrainian is a formidable opponent who starts as favourite.

Enzo Calzaghe, the Newbridge fighter's trainer, said: "Soul, heart and spirit will be needed because Kotelnik is a top-drawer fighter and he's going to want Gav's title. If he shines, the world is his oyster because there are some great fights out there for him."

The challenger, 30, with 28 wins in 31 fights, is still bitter about not being awarded the decision against M'Baye in Liverpool. "It appeared to boxing experts and the fans that I'd won the fight, but the British judges saw it differently," he said.

Roy Jones put himself forward yesterday to fight the winner of the clash between Clinton Woods and Antonio Tarver on April 12.
