eSata HDD Recording

Where is the eSata recording port? I can see only one USB in the front. Can it record by USB?

@pipino. Can this receiver also act as a server in c/s or needs DM or PC serving?

hi,

the eSATA i think is internal (i still need to open the box to confirm that)
for USB i didnt try yet neither ,for CS ,you only can put this box as client(you can put up to 10 differents servers) from serving PC o DM...cheers

How is the picture quality in SD channels via HDMI? Can you compare it with other HD receivers? Is the picture sharper?

The GI S890 will be replaced soon by a new HD receiver from GI that will record via USB.

This box is available with quite a few different labels. Octagon 918HD, SAB Ultimate HD Super Plus, NEXT YE-2000 SUPER HDTV, ONLIEN LN 6060 HD...

All will have roughly the same functionality, features and faults :) Only the 918 has the external eSata port AFAIK.

I have 4 HD receivers and Interstar=Octagon are behind Vantage 7100 and Nanoxx 9500 HD in terms of SD picture quality, possibility of recording, sensitivity of tuner ( don't pick up SR below 1500 when 1000 for Vantage is standard). Apart from that there are some bugs in firmware ( like for example necessity of switching on and off couple times after you put inside different cam or card). Also just one card reader in era of availability of different cards is stupidity ( Unfortunately Nanoxx has also just one card reader). Interstar and Octagon are quite warm during standby and run hot when working-- all of them have double CI slot but for decoration rather than real use as cams in each of them get really hot. Some of the bugs are promised to be fixed in next firmwares ( and I personally belive in Octagon support team rather than in Interstar's-- unfortunately till now I haven't found out about way to put Octagon's firmware into Interstar). So whoever haven't bought yet HD receiver should wait for at least Azbox HD ( unless it is already on the market) . I personally believe that Octagon will be great ( with the hardware weaknesses it has kept in mind) but needs some time -- for Interstar support will exist till their new model appears ( like it was in case of Premium series when Xpeeds appeared) plus PVR function is question mark ( who is the unhappy owner of Interstar 9000 PVR left with firmwares consisting of only bugs should think twice before buying another Interstar)

Hi.
I've gone and got myself the GI S-890 machine, got myself an external hard-drive (and an ICY box) only to find that internally, the receiver only has the place for the esata connection but not the connector itself. This and some other components around it are missing in my version! (What a disappointment!!)
What I'd like to know from you kind people is whether I can have the missing attachment fitted on my model. (please say yes!!)
In anticipation I thank you for your help.
Regards
Bob

yes,the only difference if the actualy on-board socket for eSata hard drive ,you must have version 1 (same like the one in my pictures),in the other side i´m hearing that soon a new firmware for GI891 will be out including the eSata recording activated

That's good enough for me! :king-042::respect-059:

(You don't happen to know where I can get the parts from, do you?)
Thank you very much!:applause-003::respect-058:

if you are in the UK i presume M a p li n has the parts ,remember you may need a dremel tool to make a hole at the back to acomodate the eSata socket

Hello Pipino,
I'm sorry it took so long to get back to you and report on my progress. It took me a long while to get the components together (mostly from the States but visits were also made to a local dump to "fish" for a used sata connector from a broken motherboard).
The real story is that my brother, an electronics man, needed to change some of the components because they were the wrong size ... and he provided me with a sata connector ... and then he soldered the components on, as nicely shown on your pictures.
And Bingo! Last night I got my first chance of recording on the now "old" GI890, version 1.

This would not have been possible without your help and encouragement:bowing-036::applause-038:
(And thanks also to my brother Ron who was kind enough to do the practical side of things:respect-039::respect-064:)

So, what the heck did I do?! .... I simply own the machine (?!!) and may have helped with the sale (version 2, of course!) as Ron quite liked the GI890.
I'm very pleased with the results.... so Thanks again!
Best Wishes for the New Year.:cheers2:

@ pipino
Thanks to you really! I am very pleased with the end result - even though it took a while. (It was worth the wait. Let's now hope there will be something left for me/us to record eh.:angelsad2:)
Great forum ... great people....great stuff. :respect-040::respect-040:

@oldjiver
The cost was very low. About 10-15 dollars went for the parts which I have to say straight away was mainly for the postage of two packets with hundreds of components, out of which I only needed a few (- the eight mentioned).
The tricky part is to get a good electronics person to do the small scale soldering. It's pretty straight forward otherwise.

Regards and BEST WISHES.
Bob
