This is very interesting, could you please tell us the following:
what type of card reader is it?
what powers the card reader? I see nothing in the power socket
is it a standard usb to serial converter?
where does the usb lead go?
what software does it use?

type of card reader =standard phoenix with 3.57MHZ xtal

usb to serial converter= digitus with prolofic 2303 driver(a special Kathrein compiled version is needed)

card reader is powered directly from the board and wired under the phoenix PCB

usb lead striped at the end and wired directly on the decoder PCB using one of the usb port at the rear

i use newCS 1.50 to read the card ..

Yes all understood now. I am planning to do something similar with my Kathrein and had forgotten that I read a long time ago that the serial port isn't fully wired.
I may send you a PM about a couple of other minor details.

I am tempted to buy one (fed up of waiting for a DM) - how much ae these boxes? I assume you can patch them so a cam is not required so I was wondering if they can be used for freesat UK (eg Channel 4 HD that normally require a cam+ sly card)?

i presume yes you can use it for any FTA HD channel including freesat ,regarding channel4 as from september i think it will be FTA
