is it possible to back up the settings of your sat position and channels to your hard-drive before installing a new image, and would you be able to restore the said settings when new image is up and running

Yes,
go to menu --> plugins --> backup/restore

if you havent got this plugin displayed then download it (green button)
select which files to backup (full required for sats and channs) and where to backup to (c/f, usb stick, hdd)
this also copies cams, configs ect...

install your new image then go to..
menu --> plugins --> backup/restore

push yellow button (restore) and select 'full backup'
enigma should now restart and away you go !
