its for serial loading via the rs232c port and a pc using a null modem cable , same as on a 5000 or a 1000

but if you corrupt the receiver firmware for any reason you would have to use the serial null modem method , darkman v1.87 loader , technomate boot software , technomate official firmware and the magic patch to resurrect your box

the usb method is only any good if the box is fully functional , and so there are 2 methods of updating your box , of which you have only concentrated on one
