No DHCP server and no COM port..

Just got me a DM800, but have trouble installing new software.

Have tried looking at this guide:

I don't have DHCP server and no COM port to download via RS232.

So what can I try next?

If you have broadband connection, now would be a good time to buy a router as the DM800 is going to need a connection.

If not you could try a cross over cable but I havent done it that way so you will need to research

I have a broadband connection and a router from my cable tv supplier, but when I put the DM800 in download mode it doesn't come up with an IP address. It's just stuck at "STOP" and searching for DHCP.

I thought you needed a COM port for using a crossover connection?

You will need to install new software via the web browser with a router
As far as I know you dont need a cross over

Also make sure in the communication setup of your dm800 you have ticked the dhcp box

Hi,
Thanks for replies.

I've come a step further. Found out that I needed a switch and it now comes up with a IP address. I input the IP address in the web browser
http:\\79.160.......etc. , but I just get this message:

Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage

Most likely causes:
You are not connected to the Internet.
The website is encountering problems.
There might be a typing error in the address.

OK I just found out that the IP address on the DM800 display is the same IP address as my computer. Why doesn't the router give out separate IP address to the DM800 when I now have installed a switch?
I've rebooted the router but it didn't do any good.

Do you have a manual for your router ? if not note the make and model and download the manual from the manufacturers website then read about
setting up DHCP for that router, all routers are different so its kind of hard to solve DHCP problems if its a setting in the router causing it

Most routers have a option to set a DHCP range if thats limited to one IP then that would cause your DM to be issued the same IP as your PC but I'm
only guessing here it could be something entirely different

A cross over cable doesnt need a com port just 2 static ip addresses in the same range

just change the last 3 digits of the ip address on your pc and away you go. ie(072.068.001.005) dreambox ip
(072.068.001.005) pc
give pc static ip address 072.068.001.???

check pc ip address using ipconfig /all

??? = something different to dreambox ip value.

do this in my network place properties.

I have a Telsey Set Top Box delivered by my broadband supplier. This box only has one connection for PC. From this port I get assigned an IP address. If I want more PC's connected then I must have a firewall (which I have) in order to connect these. Behind the firewall I can have as many PC's I like...... I don't know how this is achieved, but I was told by my Dreambox satelitte dealer that if I installed a switch it would then assign different IP's to the units. Unfortunately this doesn't seem to be the case.

Must try a new approach. I have got a crossover patch cable.
Are there any good instructions on how to use this?

Get to the point where you had stop & an ip address on you dm panel again.

Set a static ip address on your pc in the same rang but with the very last digit different to the BD.

Ping the ip address of the DB to mach sure you get a reply.

If you get good reply use firefox or IE7 if you are on XP.

type in ipaddress of DB into explorer bar and follow instructions as spoke about many times.

Then you will need to use firefox.
Do***ented many times issues with IE7 vista giving problems when flashing.

No luck in getting communication going with the DM. I'm fed up and it looks like I'll be buying a router tomorrow (just what I need, another bloody box...).

why you dont make DHCP sever with your PC man ?!!
there alot of dhcp servers for windows just google download and try and he will give an IP to your DM then the IP will be showing in your DM lcd screen

Got it sorted now that I installed a router. Have installed latest Gemini.


Now just have to get on with the rest of the stuff.... :)
