Champions League - Marseille versus Liverpool - 19:45
Steve Rider is joined by Andy Townsend to present coverage of the Group D match at the Stade Velodrome, where the teams meet for the second successive season. The Reds’ visit to this stadium last term was a happy one as they secured qualification to the last 16 with a 4-0 victory. However, their earlier 1-0 defeat at Anfield against the French outfit shows there will be no room for complacency. They will also need to improve on their lacklustre performances against Standard Liege in the qualifying round if they are to take anything from this game.

Prior to his box-office success with The Sixth Sense, Bruce Willis was paired with another young lead in this minor thriller, which is a tad more imaginative than most action fare. Alec Baldwin plays the crooked national security man who’s determined to hunt them down. Director Harold Becker manages to impart a little depth to the relationship between Willis and Hughes among all the chases and shoot-outs, but the psychological backdrop is too contrived.

Arnie plays the unshaken, unstirred secret agent, always saving the world in time to get home for dinner with his wife and kids, who are blissfully unaware of his dangerous job. Aside from the truly spectacular action, there’s exceptional comedy support from Tom Arnold and a winning performance from Jamie Lee Curtis, who transforms from timid housewife to confident heroine. Clash of the Santas (drama) - 9.00pm
This is as fluffy as the trim on Santa’s costume and as daft as the idea that an overweight middle-aged man could ever squeeze down your chimney. But let’s not quibble, because this one-off comedy drama, the latest spin-off from Christmas Lights, reunites the popular Robson Green and Mark Benton as competitive brothers-in-law. This time they’re taking part in an international Santa competition in Lithuania. By the time they’ve had a go at the likes of turkey bowling and mince pie munching, there’s barely time to get home to their families for Christmas. The storyline is thinner than gravy in the Scrooge household, so just think of this as a vehicle for Green and Benton to be lovable chappies against a festive backdrop of Santas and snow.

Unleased (film) - 11.15pm to 1.05am
Jet Li plays a sort of human Rottweiler, who has been raised and kept caged like an animal, and is only unleashed when gangster Bob Hoskins needs him to do the one thing he knows - fight. Set in Glasgow (though you’d scarcely credit it from the accents), this has Li rediscovering his humanity, courtesy of the relationship he builds with blind piano tuner Morgan Freeman. As with most Li films, the best bits are the action ones: they’re fast, brutal and with a feel of the real about them. Unlike most Li films, the in-between bits are quite good, too - odd, but interesting. While this will appeal mainly to his hardcore fans, there’s some potential interest for a wider audience, and this is certainly Li’s most interesting non-Hong Kong work to date.

Notting Hill (film) - 9.00pm to 11.20pm
The Four Weddings team produced another smash with this charming tale about a bumbling bookshop owner (Hugh Grant) who falls for the “most famous actress in the world” (Julia Roberts). Inevitably, the course of true love is a bumpy road, with friends, family and layabout flatmate Spike (played by Rhys Ifans in a career-making performance) getting in the way, but that’s the cue for a series of screamingly funny scenarios. Saturated with wit and well directed by Roger Michell, the film was bashed by sceptics for its fluffiness and lack of realism (for a racially mixed area of London, there’s not a black face to be seen). But, if you can accept the context as 100 per cent white middle class, with a light-hearted commentary on the nature of celebrity, it’s an intensely enjoyable experience.
