If you have a standard upscaling dvd player that has HDMI output to upscale onto a HD tv, Can you play a divx file that is in 720 resolution? Will the picture on the tv be the true original format from the divx file?
Or does the dvd player read the divx file at a lower resolution and then upscale it again?
Hope you understand what i mean?

Basically i want to play downloaded 720 files on my HD TV via an HDMI DVD player?

My current dvd player does not have HDMI output, Just scart/Composite.

Upscaling dvd players only handle SD resolutions you cant play any HD content, in any case most ripped HD stuff is x264 in a mkv container not divx/xvid

So you really want something that handles x264 in a mkv container something like the "Popcorn Hour 100/110" or a ""TVIX 7000/6500"

i was looking at a standalone hd media player, but are considering a dm800, surely that can do exactly the same but with sat tv reception thrown in? :)

I've built my own HD freeview/sat receiver and media centre using Linux, VDR, XBMC and a reel multimedia eHD PCI card. It rocks! Does everything and even streams video / recordings over the network to other receivers (Hauppauge MVPs) in the house.
