View Full Version : Best HD Linux based sat tv receiver?

I suppose the future [criteria for consideration in this thread] lies in a receiver with:

1) Linux OS [Enigma 2 images]

2) High Definition [1080p and upscaling?]

3) dual tuner [watching a channel from one and recording from another transponder]

4) HDD [250 GB min]

5) Multiemu support

6) Ethernet connectivity for live downloading/updating

ESSENTIAL:

And why, please? Your reasoning - why that receiver?:respect-054:

Afterwards, I'll add a poll, when you have a number of suggestions... :)

Cheers!;)

Firstly Darkbox 9000 = AB IPBox 9000 = DG Station Cuberevo

None of the above boxes will at present have enigma2 working natively, there is always the possibility that Enigma2 could be ported over but at the moment that would be no more than an Alpha image ... as can be seen with the kathrein UFS 910.

dm800 is the only box with working usable Enigma2 at the moment, but its only single tuner, DM8000 should be with us sometime soon but will cost 800Euro+

I don't think any box gives you 1080p, only 720p or 1080i

Also, not all receivers have the full compliment of EMU's working, eg IPBox 9000 and equivalents does not have CCcam running on it (needs CCcam source code to be completely recompiled for SH4 processors)

So no one box will do what you want at present (apart from possibly DM8000)

So it maybe better to ask what your mandatory requirements are ..then people may be able to streamline your options

Cuberevo = AB IPBox 900 / 90000 = Darkbox 9000 = DG Station Produser

AB IPbox 9000 HD / Cuberevo
is the box to have at the moment and Darkbox 9000 when it is out

Why , i will say becouse is much beter quality both hardware and software.
Has beter picture that other receivers i have tested, upscaling SD and HD .
It is very stable ( 4 months non stop working here )
it does what you as for , and it does 90% of what the fabrication promised
Does not gett hot as other HD receivers i have tested .
Works with Mgcamd - Mbox , Newcs ( for me newcs is perfect and all i need )

CCcam does not work , but then agein why does every one hands on to CCcam ,

i will say ppl that answer this thread must first own some linux receivers to make an posting , and some diferent HD receivers

i my self have compared IPbox 9000 ageinst Kathrein 910 , Dreambox 800
Octagon 918 , Opti*** 7700 , Darkbox HD 2008 , Hyro 9000 HD ,
this are not all Linux receivers but HD , and IPbox for my self stands above them all untill now.

Dreambox maybe better when it comes to CCcam , but CCcam is not everything, i own Dreambox 800 but i do not use it as is unstable
Dreambox maybe wins the game becouse have CCcam , else nothing new in the Dreambox .

cheers

It will need to be ported to work on these type of receivers, it works of sorts on Kathrein UFS910 so anythings possible ... but its not a workable stable image.

Not sure how you can have an inbetween enigma ... both are very different ..enigma2 uses C++ and Python, and enigma1 is C++ so somewhere in between will be quite interesting ...

guess we'll know for sure when it appears ... but if it works on DB9000 then it will also work IPBo***00 (which you can buy now) and Cuberevo (which you can buy now)

I agree with bobi.

I have the db800,Ipbox 900 and Octagan 918.

The ipbox 900 /cuberevo is better then them all.

The db800 still has the same bugs that it had when I bought it back in march.
The Octagan 918 is a good box but its not true open source linux.

The ipbox 900/cuberevo mini I have had now for about a month and its does everything that it is suppose to do, it does not crash, overheat or give silly messages about tune error.
The only thing missing from it is CCcam but who needs CCcam, my cards now running under newcs and mgcamd works great with it.

Regarding this box from Darkman, i am not got to say anything because I have not even seen it ( for real ) let alone try it.
One thing I will say I will be amazed if CCcam works on it, because I know other guys on other forums that have tried very hard to modify CCcam for other boxes and even though its been done for the cubecafe250 I can't see how without inside knowledge it can be done for this new box.

Thank you, guys! Now it looks like a really interesting thread I was hoping it to be... :respect-054:

Yes, I have an old Philips DBox2 and my PB Enigma 6.01 gives better results than Neutrino, by far, even though N. has some advantages.

Was thinking ahead, when, in maybe 1-2 years, it might be necessary to buy a receiver that will last for quite a while. So far we've seen DM800 with a design flaw and overheating etc.

Keep it coming, please, it is very informative, especially for us, poor sods, and people who do not work in the industry, so we can't compare properly...

Cheers!!!:coolgleamA:

Have to disagree.

Sif team are supporting this box and I can think of at least two forums too.
No problem with HDTV recordings.
HDD works prefect for me, using esata powered by usb and not a single problem.
Divx support don't know about and don't care about.
ITV HD missing have to agree with and this lets the box down.
DVB-T problems not heard of any guys with this problem and to be honest how many people by a linux receiver for watching tv via a aerial.
Unstable images ! no way had my box over a month and not a single crash, freeze,
I am so impressed with this box that I have cancelled my sky+ sub and I'm just using this now and there is no way my wife and kids would let me cancel sky+ if this box is no good. I never had the confindence to let my family use the db800 instead of sky+.
Even now upstairs I have just gone from 7.0e to 28.0e on my db800 and guess what get the same old error message on the db800 about tune error and no picture.

With me I tell it how it is, I don't support dream or Dg Station.
I always give my honest opinion and for me for stability is the main concern and for that reason alone the current best linux hd receiver is the ipbox.
You have only got to look at the Dr Dish preview to see this.

Darkbox 9000 HD will Run enigma, not one or two but an in between!

It will also run CCcam.

Maybe darkman can give us some more info here.

Not sure you can have an in between they use very different processes, enigma1 is based on c+ and c++ and enigma 2 is based on python with a backend written in C++.
If you try to mix the 2 then it would probably cause more problems than solve, I mean how would you select what plugins to run, are they to be based round C or python?

That said it is possible to get enigma running on other hardware by porting it.
What is not possible is to get Cccam running on any box that uses an SH4 processor which the Ipbox 9000 uses as does the Kathrein and many other HD boxes out there except the Dreams.

So if you need Cccam do not go for a box based on an SH4 processor even if it is running a variant of Enigma as you will be disappointed.

If you have no need for Cccam then the Ipbox 9000 is a good choice and I have to say the specs of the Darkbox look good as well.

well they are the same box :p

the only difference will be if a different team appears making an image solely for the darkbox .... but again it will work on IP box and cuberevo and of course the other important thing is Price !!!

I think you will find that's enigma for the 900 not the 9000 but only Gbox, Mgcamd, camd3 and evocamd will be available as emus much the same as what is available for the kathrein.

Just to be clear Enigma 1 does not and will not support twin tuners, for this you have to have enigma 2 or another flavour of linux running your box such as STi linux which is the default linux for SH4 processors.
Also there are parts of Enigma2 that are not open source and this is why porting it is a very slow process as can be seen with the port to the Kathrein as this has been in alpha stage for months and has only recently progressed beyond the need for a separate nfs server to boot it.
This is another reason why an in between of E1 and E2 is not likely to work very well if at all.

However Enigma1 on the 900 is a big break through and will still make the 900HD a much more attractive prospect as an HD receiver.

I think at the moment the best hd solution would be skyHD, with the kind of price you are paying for these boxes, you might as well subscribe for many years and get uninterrupted viewing.

Also I heard there is a project going on to make skyHD boxes to install Linux on them, as they have Linux of sort on them already.

Also you got so many good quality boxes out there and dream is not one of them especially what they did, they should never be forgiven for that, and can you imagine the price would from the rip off's if it not for ipbox and likes, we'd probably be paying thousand odd quids for dm800.

The Darkbox 9000HD I think is going be the best especially in price, and we all know darkman go crazy sometimes and might even give it out at the cost price, to get a better share in the market.

Keano

m8 I agree with you about sky hd being a good box and i had to think long and hard about cancelling it last week.

Full sky hd package will set you back £55 a month.

I have just bought the ipb*x 900 for £250, so 5 months of subs will cover the cost.

Then your sky hd box is not going to drive your motor east to west nor will open many other providers across Europe and the Middle East.

Finally the bottom line is most of guys on here are hobbist and having a box that can't be messed with is no fun, I've got 7 linux boxes sat here now and no doubt that will increase to 8 before Christmas.

I am looking forward to trying engima on ipb*x and also looking forward to Darkmans box.

It is only Enigma 1 on the 900 that is for sure, but to be able to utilize the twin tuners in the 9000, whether it be the Darkbox or the Ipbox you will have to have Enigma 2.

Very carefully read the thread, and see that discussions go over AP Box. I don't know what it is, because I have DM800HD and may say that the problems with the first images are almost solved.
Now it works perfectly with my WiFi USB adapter D-Link G122, and the main problem that it have was the heating with the last to bootloader images #62 and #67 it is may say working like a freezer onto HD channels.

Maybe adding a worst option would give more results as ... well most people only have one HD box and if it's cr@p it's cr@p...
Like my DM800, what a waste of money.
Almost all the images are bad or awful, lots of crashing, problems with HD not showing or just poor CAM support for Gbox, even the ones that have it don't really have it too good.
SO I for one couldn't vote for DM800 and I know nothing of the others, heard from a few people IPBox 900/910 was good, so I may sell this brick and get one of those...

well i am looking to buy a linux hd box..

i just want one that is going to improve and progress and not become a waste of money

normally a safe bet is a dreambox with it being fully open source and is improved all the time... but it is quite basic hardware wise

then there are different boxes that have more to offer hardware wise but my concern is these wont progress to much due to the not fully open software

dm8000 is a rediculous price, if it was £400 then it would be a no brainer but i am looking for a decent box for £400

at the moment i just don't know..

Well tested all availeble boxes in list accept dm8000 and azbox premium ( have the elite overhere )

Had to vote for the Azbox although fw isn't finished yet.

Stable box good quality and last but not least good money value ( yeahh i'am dutch:p).

Tested also Ipboxes 900-910-9000 no way they come near the azbox (or dreambox in that way).
So therefore the darkbox 9000 won't do better ( just a ripp off from Ipbo***00) although I didn't see it yet.

Q-box same story didn't see it yet, should have to do with enigma2 and the sh4 proc I guess.

Heh, a bit of time has passed and I presume we are a little bit more experienced and maybe even that bit wiser... ;)

AZbox HD turned out to be good but a nerve wrecker for some, at least in relation to the promises [and lies]...

So, now what? Any other, new boxes on the horizon, that are really worth the money, doing it all?!?

And I don't mean boxes that cost more than £400 - that's unacceptable to most...

So, mid-range prices + quality being the best that it can be...

Hi

Well, if you think on that way that it´s a linux box you can take a lot of other receivers also here. Also new spiderbox HD etc...and a lot of similar as TM-7100.(not so many tuners of course)

TM has also 9100 super(and elder 9100) models which are Linux based receivers actually pretty similar as ITGate. But SD ones. (Yes I have it)

Technomate HD linux receiver is comming soon, Technomate and ITGate had already made great linux receivers, lets see if the HD is as good as the old ones.

But no problem for me m8 i do not get any haemorrhoids about it :respect-062:

I do not understand you problem/measuring stick/basis for judgement. :toetap05:

For me it's simple: is it Linux OS or not? Full stop!

It's not philosophy, this. It's rather simple.:svengo:

We are also not asking if a box has a clone - just is it Linux HD box and what other capacities it has...

Please, list them and state how it works, its features, what kind of support it has, its shortcomings etc.

If you know for sure. Not if you heard something from a third person.

Hi

Take it easy.I did not offend to You.I was only asking why its on linux based hd section...and then this starts.

Linux based are open source receivers like TM9100 (also 500/600 series)

I think I did not mention any word "Clone" in my reply.

So how many teams are making images for tm 7100 ?

And I really do not care how other people are dividing these to linux/non linux groups.Main thing is that all know what are we talking about.
(because there are many receivers in the middle...but they are not linux based receivers even having newcamd etc...)

Simply:Its not a linux receiver. But I hope all the best for that in future.

:woot-035:Damn, this I'd like to test!!!:respect-050: I have a few quick Qs:

1) Which processor/chipset does it use? This is important re. various formats that it can play...

2) How much, what kind and which memory exactly does it have?

3) Which tuners are built-in? Also, why do they not support 1080p? Is HW-based blindscan fully operational, so one does NOT need to give it SR or any other parameter, before it can search? PiP working well?

4) Does it have HW-based multimedia streaming or only plug-ins based, sort of "stuck on top"? Indeed, does it have the streaming option ([W]LAN and USB/eSATA)?

5) Is eSATA port working well [tested] for an external HDD when one watches films? Btw, I can't see one on the photos... Is it the one inside, where the HDD caddy plug in or...?

6) Which formats [and at which bitrates] can it play: video, audio, photo? Can it play all the formats and bitrates not only from internal/external HDD but also USB memory stick?

7) Does it all work WELL, without stuttering or freezes, streaming-wise, too: from a PC/laptop/NAS drive?

8) Which OS does it use? If it is Linux - are they allowing the hobbyists to use all the necessary tools for developing FW/SW for it?

9) NewCS + CCcam is a complete Card Reader/Server + Client package, working flawlessly with all cards or some or even many have "hiccups" while working?

10) Some state 1 and some state 2 built-in card readers? Which is it and why the discrepancy? Another "semi-product" hitting the high street or...?!?

11) Any other Emus/CS SW available for it?

12) How about plug-ins and tools [like Channel list editor] for it: any available?

13) It has only 16 Favs? How come?

14) Which teams are writing for this machine?

15) Is DiSEqC 1.1 fully operational [up to 64 LNBs]?!? Twin sat TV tuner means one could easily need 32 or more LNBs with a Toroidal dish and 16 Twin LNBs!

Not bad... ;)

Smart recs [the new crop coming] have dual boot [Linux from USB stick] etc. but they have a cheaper tuner -> 1080i only... Also in Ferguson...

Stronger processor in Coolstream, for instance...

The price is steep!

How about "our" toys for it - Linux toys...? :D
