Hi

Turned my trusty 5400 on last night and immediately there was burning
at the front left hand side - turned off straight away.

Is this where the power supply is?

I've read the post way back that talks about repairing the PSU - I'd really like to keep it if poss - had it for over 10 years.

What other 'cheap' alternatives are there if its gone:mad:? Footie is my main view.

Yes, the power supply board is down the left side. The frying was probably the wirewound resistor near the front.

There used to be a chap on fleabay that did exchange boards, but they're not cheap, about £20 IIRC. Having said that, to do a proper refurb, there's quite a few capacitors to change.

If you do intend DIY, make sure that the big high voltage reservoir capacitor towards the back of the board is discharged before working on it, it can give you a nasty belt.

is there any step by step guide for replacement of parts etc and where to buy the bits needed.

Haven't had a chance to look at the internals yet but power suppl has been a bit dodgy for a while now.

How do you discharge the big capacitor?

Not had much experience with electronics but not difficult to use a soldering iron is it? Rather spend £20-£30 and keep the box than get another.

You can discharge the cap with a suitable big resistor, say 2000 ohm 25W, held on for a few seconds... but keep your fingers out of the way.

Alternatively, and the best option for you, you should be okay if the receiver hasn't been connected to the mains for a few days.

If I were you, I would be tempted to just fit one of the exchange boards off fleabay, it should be a straight swap and a guaranteed fix, if it is the power supply board at fault. It's easy enough to DIY, and if you get stuck I'm sure he'll help you, or I'm here most days. His email is also on the listing if you want to buy from him directly.

...not sure if you have seen these already? This would repair 99% of boards, although not guaranteed.

you can also find , if you are a lucky, a power supply with uprated capacitors,

so in theory they should and probably do last longer, and don't get so hot.

Just to confirm the part referred to - is it the whole PSU i.e. all I need to fix the problem?

as most has said it is always best to change the psu over repairing, and to answer your last question, the item shown is the full PSU and it should solve the problem, but how long is a bit of string as they say,
