Use a memory stick to update this model, its much easier.

I tried the serial lead and pc method and it was a real pain, for the dosh its a good reciever but it does run very hot.

Ive got a passion go to fortecstar.com web site and click on passion+ when the page comes up at the top it says downloads click in the box on passion+ two new updates appear down load these onto your pc and unzip them now put them onto a usb stick and load them directly onto the passion via usb port on the front hope this helps

Passion+ software should not be loaded onto a Passion receiver.

The OP did not mention his friend had a Passion+

its easy to install firmware - shove the software (loader and firmware) onto an USB Hardisk or USB mem stick, as flat files. (extracted first) - plug into STB.

Press USB on remote, and select front or rear - when done, goto file management, then find the loader file, and hit ok, then repeat for firmware file - it reboots, job done.
