Golden Boy (Film)
William Holden, in his debut film, plays Joe Bonaparte, a promising but struggling young violinist who finds he has the talent to be a boxer and earn good money. But when he loses his appetite for the ring, Moody's mistress Lorna Moon persuades him to return for one big fight. He wins but his opponent dies and a chastened Joe, with Lorna at his side, returns to his father and his music. Rouben Mamoulian's drama, based on a hit Broadway play, boasts realistic fight scenes shot at the legendary Madison Square Gardens.

(Black and White, 1939, PG, 3 Star)

Black Narcissus (Film)
Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger's Oscar-winning classic film of repressed desires and lust among a community of Anglican nuns in the Himalayan hills. Deborah Kerr stars as their leader, Sister Clodagh, trying to hold their faith together in spite of the very un-nun like leanings of Sister Ruth who becomes infatuated with local landowner Mr Dean.
Director: Emeric Pressburger, Michael Powell

(Subtitles, 1947, U, 4 Star)

Napoleon Dynamite (Film)
Jared Hess's high-school comedy stars Jon Heder as the eponymous Napoleon Dynamite, who is on the lowest rung of the nerd ladder - even his best friend Pedro Sanchez beats him to a date for the high-school dance. But when Pedro asks Napoleon to be his campaign manager for the school election, how can he refuse? Napoleon's home life is equally strange: his brother Kip, whose waking hours are spent online in chat rooms, and his uncle Rico, who is stuck in 1982, are his only relatives. Add in a time-travel machine and cow-judging competitions for a compellingly weird film.
Director: Jared Hess
Starring: Jon Heder, Jon Gries, Aaron Ruell, Efren Ramirez, Diedrich Bader, Tina Majorino
(Widescreen, Subtitles, 2004, PG, 3 Star)

Accompanied by heavenly assistants Jay and Silent Bob, she sets out on a mission to stop them. Kevin Smith's controversial film is a fascinating mix of themes and characters from his earlier films that offers an interesting theological look at his normal New Jersey-set-and-peopled milieu.

The Naked Gun 2 1/2: The Smell Of Fear (Film)
"Frank Drebin Is Back. Just Accept It" runs the tagline for this follow-up to the smash hit original as Leslie Nielsen reprises the role of totally fearless and totally stupid cop Lt Frank Drebin. This time, he uncovers a plot by the polluting energy giants to de-rail ecological plans that could render their products redundant. They're led by the evil Quentin Hapsburg who, to make matters worse, is romancing Frank's ex, Jane Spencer. But that's enough of the plot; David Zucker's film contains sight and script gags galore, with Nielsen and the rest of the cast playing it straight down the line amid the comedic mayhem.
Director: David Zucker

(1991, 15, 3 Star)
