View Full Version : What is best alternative now?

Seems like, from comments here, that the Humax has had its day - that's a real shame as it's been brilliant!

Is there an obvious alternative that is capable of clearing channels and is well supported by files, etc?

I am in NW England and have a 1m motorised dish.

My main interest is in Premiership football (Premiere Sport Portal and Galaxie have been great for last 2 seasons!)

Any suggestions?

Interesting - what does the diablo give you that a plain 5400+Hot doesn't?

Thanks!

I'm sure there is plenty on life in the old dog yet.
Just a case of playing the waiting game.
As soon as a new public hack appears, all will be back to normal.
We have had times in the past when very few public files were around.
Swings and roundabouts, that's the name of the game!

That's what the people behind cam or card releases want you think.

Similar threads in TM, Dreambox and other sections recently

I'm very patient - besides digi.tv is still open.

I personally think it is time to move on i have 5400 for years, changed to humax hdci with diablo, then to dreambox 500s and now to dreambox 800hd using cs.i definately think i have gone in the right direction, there will never ever be the support for the hummy that there was,it was a great servant and think its best days are well and truly over

Mmmmmm thats 4 boxes you have bought milkybarkid! Thats a lot a money to spend every few years.
Some of us are more conservative in our approach to spending money and look at the cost more carefully. I bought a D2mac box years ao followed by my Hummy 5400 8 years ago. The only other outlay was a season interface, conax cam and a dvb-s2 card for the PC.
My wife would nag about the cost of such equipment as she (quite rightly) would compare the cost of an official sub against the expense/hassle of the hobby. I must admit there is enormous pleasure in setting up a new system/device and when the times are good there is a lot to watch (again she points out that I don't actually watch much sat tv)! I would agree that as this is a hobby we can end up spending more money than we need.
I personally am waiting to make a further upgrade to a HD box and I am interested in a 9000hd/8000hd or the soon to be released AZbox. For me it is important that the right box is cost effective and have good support so that i will not need to spend more money over the next 5-8 years (like my trusted Hummy).

there are awlays people who will chase the game by buying lots of the latest kit. If you can afford it why not I would do the same but tend to wait. The DB i have has served me well for many years now and I wont be changing unless it breaks on me. Each to their own :-)

jimmyboy.I have been there through the d2mac days with tv2,tv1000,canal +
programming cards with an old ad tek programmer.i use to programme the pic1684 chip used for sky series 8 cards, adult channel and eurotica.I have had the hummy since d2 mac days ended and it certainly owes me nothing,i have used plenty of fun cards and different cams and season interfaces before the hot emu patch was released.I do not mind spending money on this hobby.I would have spent a lot more over the years to sly and would have not had half as much football and movies. Do you think i gave the equipment away that i dont use, i put it up on an aution site and got a lot of money back.I bet if you sub to sly you have spent a lot more money than i have spent over the years .I will also change to dreambox 8000 when it is released for it twin tuner. Then i will put up the 800 for sale.In the mean time i am fortunate enough to be using such an amazing versatile machine with cs and i could
not be happier.I honestly think you should move on if you are serious about this hobby.

My first non 28e box in the digital age was a Humax 5400 and I can remember buying it. After getting it home I programmed a card and there was a lot of channels/packages open. All the via1, seca1, and ird1, it was amazing. If you can think back to them days and feel what it was like, I feel like i'm back there now with the CS. The trouble now is that way too many channels are open with a linux box and it just feels mad. I hardly ever actully watch TV, I just satellite/channel hop from one to another. :smilielol5:

Hi

Had my 5400 for years, truely brilliant

I now run an echolink with abracadabra card for £100 complete, brilliant box with very quick support from the moresat team.

I considered the diablo with my 5400 but it was more expensive, by the time I had bought the cass interface for programming it and the modern boxes are smaller and better picture and sound quality
I also read that some freezing can occur when on certain channels with the diablo, echolink really is a good box

To add you only have to read this forum how confused diablo users get, I realise that many times it is because they dont read befor asking questions but to be fair to many peiple there are so many diablo and digi tv threads you would have to search forever

Hi Marco

Sorry to appear negative but the humax has come to the end of its life for watching pay tv. When digi tv finally goes to n3 the onboard emu will be just about finished apart from CW and external ci modules.

PH stated a long time ago that the cpu is not up to the job anymore and of course the actual memory is also all used. I cant see anyone else developing the 5400 any further because the clones(echolink) are so cheap nowadays

cheers
