But when Walter is offered a job that will mean more time away, and Clare falls in love with a man Harriet deems unsuitable, she will do anything to maintain the status quo and her reign. Crawford is superb as a domineering monster and director Vincent Sherman, helped by Crawford herself, ensured that the final cut emphasised her role at the expense of the others.
