The Americano (Film)
Glenn Ford plays Sam Dent, a cowboy given the job of delivering a herd of Brahma bulls to a Brazilian ranch. Along the way he must face land-grabber Bento Hermany and bandit El Gato while romance comes in the shape of Marianna and Teresa, two smouldering temptresses. Cult director William Castle was given a bigger budget than usual for this film and rewarded the producers with an all-action western, as Dent also contends with piranha-infested rivers and lurking jungle predators.

From Japan's Studio Ghibli, Isao Takahata's film uses the tanuki, creatures of myth, as his heroes. Beloved folk-tale characters, they are viewed as bringers of fortune with shape-changing abilities. In this film, their forest home is being threatened by urban development and, to save it, they must use all their supernatural talents. Dubbed in English.

Christophe Gans' stylish horror film, based on the classic video game of the same name, stars Radha Mitchell as Rose Da Silva, whose infant daughter Sharon keeps having nightmares about Silent Hill. Rosa decides to take her to the town in an attempt to solve the puzzle but on the way, she blacks out following a minor road accident. Coming round, she finds her daughter has disappeared into the deserted town, a place of evil that sits atop a smouldering mine, where grey ash falls, making it perpetual night and where the only inhabitants include bloodthirsty babies and ****** nurses. Not only must she avoid their murderous attentions, she must get to Sharon before they do.

But what she doesn't realise is that Stark is dangerously insane and both he and Stella are being manipulated by the devious Dr Peter Cleave, bitter at being overlooked for the top job and eager for revenge.

Irene Dunn plays prim schoolmistress Theodora Lynn of the small Connecticut town Lynnfield, named after her ancestors. But to liven up her dull life, she secretly writes a racy novel based on the town which, when serialised in the town paper under a nom de plume, creates a local scandal. But when it is published as a book and becomes a national bestseller, Lynn is exposed and ostracised until the town discovers it's become a literary hotspot for tourists. Richard Boleslawski's comedy co-stars Melvyn Douglas as Michael Grant, the book's illustrator who, unhappily married to a socialite, falls for the honest charms of Theodora.

Phil Agland makes his fictional feature film debut in this Film4-funded adaptation of Thomas Hardy's classic novel. Emily Woof plays the daughter of a sawmill owner who loves woodsman Giles Winterbourne, but is pushed into a 'better' marriage to Dr FitzPiers with tragic consequences. Together with the narrative, Agland's sumptuous cinematic evocation of Hardy's Wes*** captures the eye in a way few directors can.

In her daydream, she wonders what life could have been and what he's doing now.

Abderrahmane Sissako's political drama is seen through the eyes and experiences of Malian bar singer Melé and her unemployed husband Chaka whose rocky marriage is an analogy for the suffering caused to Africa by the First World. A court is set up in the courtyard of their home to try the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund for their roles in impoverishing the continent.
