On my way out to get is there SATA300 HDD for my DM800, noticed that there is a 7200rpm on offer today and was wondering if it was worth paying the extra money and would it work in my DM800.

Also I have no fan fitted so what manufactures HDD produce the least heat?

i think they recommend a lower speed drive as it makes it more quieter, my tm9100 as a 7200 rpm drive and its really loud because of the speed.

Infact it sounds like a plane coming in, thats probably why i dont use it.

Update for anyone else looking at HDD that will be compatable out of the box with your DM800.

Hitachi claimed to have the coolest running SATA HDD but Samsung drives offer better performance against price.

I went for the 160gb version of the Hitachi and im well happy with it.
Bit of a tight fit due to the amount of room dreammedia have left us in the DM800 but once in and formatted works perfect.

I put the same drive as aabs used (TRAVELSTAR 5K320) it is quiet and had no problems at all with it.

Thought the cables could have been a bit shorter though, pain to get tidy its a bit cramped in there :ack2:

Are you sure you have bootloader 70 installed.
It does make a difference, mine as been much cooler since I installed bootloader 70. Its got to be worth a try for you has it only takes 10 seconds max !!!

is it possible to connect a hard drive externally to the e-sata port ???

I looked at doing that their are 2 options.

1) buy an external SATA drive which will plug directly into the SATA socket on the rear or your DM800 only problem being another power supply is required to power external drive. This can with the external drive but the sockets behind my TV are already over crowded.

2) I looked at removing the external SATA socket from the DM800 (easy to do 2 screws 1 connector and then pass the cable through the hole to an internal HDD drive mounted externally leaving no need for extra power supply as it would be using the power source as an internal HDD in the DM800.

There is also a 3rd clean option which is a USB external HDD
On the posiive side it keeps your box cool and is portable.
On the negative side it takes up a USB port and I read on many forums people having problems getting them set up and working correctly.
Although once this was done the users did sound happy with them.

I am please with the choice I made as I have now left my DM800 on all night recording for 5 hours. I checked next morning box was a little warm but by no means over heating.
